Overactive Bladder can cause urinary urgency, urinary frequency, and urgency incontinence. Many patients are affected by this problem and it can cause patients embarrassment, frustration, and anxiety. Many patients have to wear pads or even diapers and others can be afraid they won’t be able to find a bathroom when they are out shopping.
For the last 30 years, since the advent of medications called anticholinergics, there has not been any new medication types to manage this problem. There has been Ditropan, Vesicare, Enablex, Detrol LA, Sanctura, etc.. but these are all medications called anticholinergics and work in similar ways. These medications can be helpful to many patients but in many others their symptoms persist. In other patients, they do not like the side effects of anticholinergics with dry mouth or constipation.
Soon released this year is a medication called Myrbetriq. This is the first new medication for Overactive Bladder Symptoms that works with a completely different mechanism. It is a beta-3 adrenergic agonist and not an anticholinergic medication. This medication actually stimulates a receptor on the bladder wall and allows the bladder wall smooth muscle to relax. This medication can be effective in reducing Overactive Bladder Symptoms.
